The “I am a Touch Rugby Coach” program was more than just sports training; it was a pathway for developing confident, capable youth with a passion for community and leadership. Through this project, rangatahi from Papakura High School gained an in-depth view into the world of touch rugby coaching, preparing them to pursue coaching careers in their communities if they choose to after finishing secondary school or university.
Our rangatahi participants spent six weeks building skills in four core areas: coaching, refereeing, event management, and media. Each area offered unique insights and challenges, equipping young leaders with the well-rounded knowledge necessary to thrive as future coaches.
During the program, the rangatahi delivered coaching sessions to tamariki in three local primary and middle schools, making a meaningful impact. Teachers who remembered them from their school years were impressed by their growth and maturity, witnessing firsthand how these young leaders transformed from students into mentors. The rangatahi expressed how much they enjoyed teaching and connecting with younger students, gaining confidence and pride through their work.
The program culminated in a Year 5-8 mini touch rugby tournament, organized and run entirely by the rangatahi. This event marked the completion of their hard work and development, showing the value of giving youth the tools and opportunities to lead.
